Difference Between MSME, Udyam & Startup India Registration in India
India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is booming with new businesses, small industries, and innovative startups. But many founders get confused about which registration they actually need — MSME Registration, Udyam Registration, or Startup India Registration. Although these three terms are often used together, each registration serves a different purpose, offers different benefits, and applies to different types of businesses. MSME stands for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.
Earlier, businesses registered under the MSME scheme through the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) portal.
MSME classification was based on two factors:
Investment in Plant & Machinery
Annual Turnover
But after 2020 reforms, MSME registration was replaced by Udyam Registration, and the old “MSME Registration Certificate” is no longer issued.
Udyam Registration is the new MSME Registration system launched by the Government of India in July 2020.
It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar system.
Manufacturing businesses
Service businesses
Retailers
Traders
Startups & small companies
Proprietorship, partnership, LLP, Pvt Ltd
Zero-cost registration
Easy bank loan approval under Mudra & CGTMSE
Collateral-free loans
Lower interest rates
Subsidies on patents & barcodes
Concession on electricity
Protection against delayed payments (MSME Samadhaan)
Priority in government tenders
The classification is now based on a composite formula of Turnover + Investment:
| Category | Investment Limit | Turnover Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹1 crore | Up to ₹5 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹50 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹50 crore | Up to ₹250 crore |
Thus, Udyam Registration = Updated MSME Registration.
